You Are Not Failing. God is Refining You in 3 Ways

After more than 20 years in women’s ministry, I’ve sat across from some of the most capable, intelligent, faithful women I’ve ever met, and almost all of them have said the same thing: “I feel like I’m failing.” Not because they’ve actually failed. But because somewhere along the way, they started believing that life is one long test, and they’re not passing. Maybe you’ve felt it too. That quiet voice that says you’re not doing enough, not growing fast enough, not getting it right. That every mistake is proof you’re disqualified. That if you didn’t figure it out the first time, you missed your shot.

But here’s what I’ve learned: God doesn’t test you to see if you’re good enough. He tests you to show you who He’s already made you to be. And once you understand that… everything changes. So today, I want to walk you through what the Bible actually says about testing, and why you’re not failing, you’re being refined. Enjoy!

If I asked you right now, 'Do you feel like you're failing?'—I wonder how many of you would say yes. Not because you've actually failed at life. But because somewhere along the way, you started believing that everything is a test. And you're not passing.

Maybe it started in school with all those standardized tests—the ones that didn't measure what you knew, just whether you knew how to pass. Or maybe it was scrolling through social media and seeing perfect homes, perfect bodies, perfect lives—and feeling like you could never measure up. Maybe it was a competitive work environment where your worth was tied to your performance. Or a sports team that valued winning over people. Or a church culture that made you feel like you had to earn God's approval.

Whatever it was, that lesson followed you into adulthood, didn't it? You started believing that life is just a series of tests you have to get right. That every mistake disqualifies you. That if you don't perform, you don't measure up.

But see, as believes there is a key difference we need to understand. And that is the world tests you to measure you based on your knowledge or skill, or just if you can pass the test or not. But God's testing is different. It's not to prove whether you're worthy, good enough, or deserving. It's to show you that you already are.

When we start to clearly see that life isn't this big test we have to stress out to pass every single day, but that it's a gift from God, we can shift our focus from simply performing, from getting everything right, to resting in what God's already done. And that helps relieve a lot of stress and anxiety and gives us the right perspective for why God created us in the first place.

And there are three ways God is using tests to transform you. When you know what they are, you're better prepared to pass the test and grow into who He always made you to be.

3 Ways God’s Testing Makes You Better

1. GOD TESTS THE HEART

The first thing God tests isn't your performance. It's not your knowledge. It's not even your action. It's your heart. When Saul failed as king of the Israelites, it wasn't because he didn't have the stature of a king or the respect of the people—it was because his heart had turned from God. See, when God is looking to raise someone to power or authority, He needs to know that He has the influence to move their heart. This is why Proverbs 21:1 says:

“The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.” (‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭21‬:‭1‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

In 1 Samuel 16, when God was looking for a new king to replace Saul, He sent the prophet Samuel to Jesse's house to select one of Jesse's sons to be anointed the next king of Israel. Now, God could have somehow made it so that He just told Samuel from the beginning, "David's going to be the king. He's the youngest son of Jesse. He's the one." But God doesn't do that. God sends him to Jesse's home and just tells him the king is here, and sends him on this search because He wants to teach a lesson.

When Samuel sees Jesse's oldest son, he looks like a king. He walks like a king. He has the swagger of a king. And Samuel thinks to himself, "Surely this is the king." God says, "It's not him." He goes through all of Jesse's sons, only for God to reveal, "It's not him." But then Jesse finally has his youngest son, David, come out—the shepherd boy. And when he is presented to Samuel, the Lord reveals, "That's him. He's the king."

And he eventually becomes one of the greatest kings Israel would ever have. David was known to be a man after God's own heart.

Now, why is this important? It's important because if there were some sort of kingly test that the world provided, it would ask: Can you fight vigorously in a war? How tall are you? How eloquently do you speak? Do you have the people's favor? And David did grow to have all of those things. But that's not why God chose him. God chose him because he had a heart for God.

The scripture tells us in Proverbs 4:23:

"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life." (ESV)

Even though Saul had everything he needed to be a king according to worldly standards, he didn't have the most important thing—a heart for God. Because when your heart is corrupt, when your heart is dark, it infiltrates every single aspect of your life.

And so God will send tests in your life to test your heart—not to weaken your heart, but to strengthen it. He will sometimes allow our hearts to be broken to put the pieces back together again, stronger, more resilient. He'll give us new desires, new dreams, new affections, and a new heart. Because a new heart will not just change your life—it will change you.

So what is God looking for when He tests your heart? Let me show you something. When God led the Israelites through the wilderness for 40 years, do you know what He was testing? Not if they could survive. Not if they were strong enough. He was testing their hearts.

Deuteronomy 8:2 says:

"And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not." (ESV)

And this is how God works. Proverbs 17:3 says:

"The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts." (ESV)

God isn't trying to destroy you with the test—He's refining you. He's removing what doesn't belong and strengthening what does.

Challenges reveal what you really desire and treasure. But God tests us in this way to strengthen us, to turn us to Him, to help us desire Him. King David said in Psalm 73:25, "Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you." He had everything, but he only wanted God most.

The Apostle Paul listed all his accomplishments in Philippians 3, but said they were all rubbish compared to knowing Christ. God had his heart.

The question we need to ask when we are being tested is: Do I just want to hurry up and get out of this test? Do I only want comfort and convenience? Or do I want God—even if it means staying right where I am?

As Moses was about to lead the Israelites into the promised land, he told God in Exodus 33:15, "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here." Because he realized the promise is not greater than the Promiser. He wanted the God who keeps His promises more than the promise itself.

So when we're tested, God is removing all those desires that lie to us and tell us they are better than God. He places us in tests where all we have is Him—where He is the only answer to choose—to reveal that He's the only answer we need.

Most of us think God is testing us to see what we're made of. But here's the truth: He already knows. He's not trying to discover something about you—He's trying to reveal something to you.

2. GOD TESTS YOUR FAITH

Here's the thing, though. Knowing your heart is one thing. But living from that place when everything around you is falling apart? That's where faith gets tested. Because God tests your heart to show you who you are, but He tests your faith to show you who He is.

So a few years ago, I went to have my first mammogram. And I got it pretty young—younger than normal for most women—because I have a family history of breast cancer. But before I went to get the mammogram, I wasn't really worried about anything. It was just more preventative care. But as I prepared to go take the mammogram, the Lord placed it on my heart—a word: "You don't have cancer." And I remember being like, "Okay. I didn't think I did. I wasn't really worried about it." But what I realized now, in hindsight, is that God gave me a word to test if I would trust Him—if I would believe it. Because when I went to get the mammogram, it showed up that there was an irregularity. And they wanted me to come back.

And so I was like, "Okay, you know, I wasn't really too worried. I remember what the Lord said." And they also told me, "This is a common thing—to need to come back." So they did another mammogram. And then they found something they thought was there. So they were like, "Okay, let's do an ultrasound." So I'm like, "Okay, let's do that." You know, this seems like it's kind of progressing. What's going on here? I just planned on coming and leaving. I had other things to do.

They do the ultrasound, and they find a small mass. And they're like, "It's okay. It might be something. It's probably nothing. But the only way to know for sure is to get a biopsy." So at this point, I decided to just go ahead and get that biopsy. Because with the family history of breast cancer, I'm like, "This is not anything I want to play around with. Let's get it done." But it was that waiting period—from that moment to getting the results of the biopsy—where, I'm not going to lie, I was anxious. Oh my gosh. All the questions were entering my head. But I kept going back to the word that God gave me: "You don't have cancer." And so I really had to make a choice here. And this is where a lot of us are when it comes to our faith being tested.

Are you going to believe the word of God? Or are you going to believe your circumstances? Are you going to believe the challenges you're facing? Are you going to believe the lies that the enemy is feeding you every single day? Are you going to believe the lies that the world is shouting at you every single day?

It's all a test. Now, I'm not saying that if you believe God, everything's going to work out perfectly. This isn't some prosperity gospel. But if you have a word from God—and we all have the Word of God—we have to ask ourselves: Am I going to believe God over the lies? And I'm not going to lie to you. It was a challenge. And it was a test. And God's word was true. Everything came back clear. And we were happy. But more than that, it taught me that the test strengthened my faith. God's word is true.

Now, God wasn't testing me to see if I could hear Him correctly. God was testing me to see if I would trust Him in the waiting. Because faith isn't about knowing the outcome ahead of time. Faith is believing God and what He says—even when everything else looks otherwise. James 1:2-4 says:

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4 ESV)

The purpose of God testing your faith isn't to show you how weak you are—it is to produce, to multiply, to strengthen steadfastness in your life. A faith that is unmovable, unshakable, only comes from testing—not from comfort or certainty or confidence in ourselves. It comes from going through the fire and realizing that the only reason you made it through was because God was in there with you. But in order to pass this test, we can't run from it. We have to stand firm. We have to endure. We have to persevere—so that the full effect of God's purposes and promises may be made complete in our lives. So what test of faith are you facing today?

  • Maybe it's waiting on God for a marriage—and you're watching everyone else get engaged while you're still single.
  • Maybe it's believing God for healing—and the doctor's report keeps saying the same thing.
  • Maybe it's trusting God with your finances—and the bills keep coming, but the breakthrough hasn't.
  • Maybe it's holding onto hope for your prodigal child—and every day it feels like they're drifting further away.
  • Maybe it's believing God still has a purpose for your life—even though you feel invisible, overlooked, or like you've missed your chance.

Whatever test you're in, you have a choice: Will you believe what you see? Or will you believe what God said? Because God isn't testing your faith to watch you fail. He's testing your faith to make you complete, lacking in nothing.

And here's what I need you to hear: passing the test doesn't mean you get the outcome you're praying for. It means you trust God even if you don't. It means you believe He is good even when the answer is no. It means you hold onto His character when you can't see His plan. Because faith isn't demanding that God do what you want—it's surrendering to who He is, no matter what happens. And that kind of faith? That's what makes you unshakable. Not because life worked out perfectly, but because you discovered that God Himself is enough because He told you in His Word that He is.

3. GOD TEST YOUR MIND

So God tests your heart to reveal who you are. He tests your faith to reveal who He is. But there's one more place He's testing you, and it's the place where most of us lose the battle before we even begin. Your heart can be surrendered. Your faith can be strong. But if your mind isn't aligned with God's truth? You'll still feel like you're failing. Think about it for a moment. How many times have you known God was faithful, believed He loved you, but still thought, 'I'm not good enough. I'm behind. I'm failing'? That's not a heart problem. That's a mind problem. And that's exactly why God tests your mind to help you achieve the mindset of Christ.

You can't trust God if you don't know the truth. You can't desire God if you don't know Him. When we go back to the Garden of Eden and the fall of man, the woman was deceived. She was presented a lie as though it was the truth. The serpent successfully convinced her to think that God's character should be questioned—that He would hold something good from her when, in actuality, He was protecting her.

Lies from the enemy are going to be the greatest test that you have to overcome when it comes to your mind. Because the enemy knows that if he can get to your mind, he can get to your heart—and he can get to your behaviors. And the only way to overcome a lie is with the truth of God.

That's why we do what we do here at Beloved Women—to share God's truth so that you always have it with you. We encourage you to read your Bible, to study your Bible, and we teach you how to study for yourself so that you have the truth. So that you can easily detect and overcome any lie that comes your way.

Now, the enemy will tempt you with a lie. But God will test you to reinforce His truth in your mind. That's why the Bible tells us to renew our minds every single day—because God knows that we are bombarded with lies on TV and on social media and from other people every single day. And we need to be even more fervent about exposing ourselves to the truth so that it changes us from the inside out. Jeremiah 12:3 says:

“But you, LORD, know me; you see me and test my thoughts about you.” (Jeremiah 12:3 ESV)

God isn’t testing you to see if you pass. He’s testing your heart to reveal what’s already there. He’s testing your faith to make you steadfast. He’s testing your mind to align your thoughts with His truth. Every test is an invitation to know Him—and to know who you are in Him.

So how do you apply this? Start with your heart. Ask God to search you—to reveal what desires are competing with Him. Invite Him into the broken places, the discouraged places, the places where you've been striving, and let Him do the refining work. Then, test your faith. In whatever situation you're facing right now, make the choice to believe God's word over your circumstances. Write down what He's said, speak it out loud, and return to it every time doubt creeps in. And finally, renew your mind. Stop letting the lies have more airtime than the truth. Get into God's Word daily—not to check a box, but to replace every lie the enemy has planted with the truth of who God says you are and who He is. Because when your heart is surrendered, your faith is steadfast, and your mind is aligned with God's truth, you won't just pass the test. You'll be transformed by it.

So imagine this: A year from now, you're facing a challenge that would have sent you spiraling. But this time, you don't panic. You don't question your worth. You don't believe the lie that you're failing. Because your heart has been tested and refined—and you know God has you. Your faith has been strengthened—and you've seen Him come through before. Your mind has been renewed—and you can recognize the enemy's lies the moment they show up. You're not shaken. You're not striving. You're not performing for approval you already have. You're standing firm, rooted, at peace—because you finally understand that God's tests aren't meant to break you. They're meant to make you whole. And that woman? That's who you're becoming. Not because you're getting everything right, but because God is faithful to complete the work He started in you.

Listen, if you're sitting here right now and you're realizing that so much of what you've been believing about yourself—that you're failing, that you're not enough, that you've missed your chance—are actually lies that have been feeding your worry and anxiety, I want to help you with that.
