4 Steps to Staying Calm in A Storm

4 Steps to Staying Calm in A Storm

Trying to stay calm in the face of the storms life can throw at us is beyond challenging. Sure we can throw out cute clichés.

  • All things work together.
  • Too blessed to be stressed.
  • Faith over fear.

But simply saying these statements is often not enough to help you actually experience the peace of God, no matter what storm you are facing. In today's video, I’m sharing with you 4 steps you can take today to stay calm and know God’s peace as you walk through the storms of life.

The four steps to experiencing God’s peace in a storm are:

  1. Pause.
  2. Pace Yourself.
  3. Pray.
  4. Put down your anchor.

Let’s chat about how to take each of these steps.

1. Pause

Oftentimes, life is so busy we don't have time to pause and realize that we are even in a storm and assess what type of storm we are in. We may find ourselves more irritable, tired, or sensitive, but not take the time to sit down to discover why we may be feeling this way. Often, it’s because we’re facing a storm. But if we don’t even have the time to realize we’re in a storm, we certainly don’t have time to discover what type of storm we’re in. It’s important for us to take moments of pause to assess where we are in life. What are our feelings and emotions signaling to us? What season are we in? Understanding this first will greatly help us to know how to proceed through the storm, instead of becoming numb and simply going through the motions. Watch my previous video to learn the 6 types of storms and to discover which type of storm you may be facing.

2. Pace Yourself

The second step to experiencing God’s peace in a storm is to pace yourself. Now I know, if you’re like me, you want to run right through this storm and get out as fast as you can. Trust me, I get it.

But sometimes, we keep going through the same storms and circling the same mountains because we haven’t learned the lesson from this storm yet, because we’re rushing our way through instead of trusting our way through. This is not always the case for every storm we face so again, check out my video on the 6 types of storms in life to know what type of storm you are facing. But regardless of the type of storm, all storms have lessons to offer. James 1 tells us to allow our trials to have its full effect that we may lack nothing. As we pace ourselves through the storms of life, trusting in God and not rushing the situation we find peace even when it’s raining.

3. Pray

The third step to take to experience God’s peace in a storm is to pray. Prayer is our direct connection with God to receive His power and if there is anything we need more of during a storm, is prayer. Like in a natural storm, you run the risk of your power going out. Don’t let that be the case spiritually. Storms can tempt us to get distracted with the storm itself and lose focus on God. Prayer on the other hand helps us to keep our eyes on God who is greater than any storm we will face in life. Isaiah 26:3 says:

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3 ESV)

When our mind is on God, we can receive His peace no matter what we are facing and prayer is a great way to do just that.

4. Put Down Your Anchor

The fourth and final step to experiencing God’s peace in a storm is to put down your anchor and stand firm on the truth of God. An anchor is a heavy object attached to a boat or ship by a chain or cable that is cast overboard to hold the boat or ship in a particular place. When winds or storms come, the boat may rock, but it won’t lose its place or become lost at sea. In the same way, we too need anchors to keep us grounded when we face the storms of life and God has given us His Word and promises to help us stand firm no matter what life throws our way. When a storm comes we’re tempted to think we won’t make it, God is not with us, and even that God is mad at us. But these negative thoughts cause us to spiral out of control and lose peace. The blessing is that we don’t have to believe these thoughts because they are not true. The truth is God is with you and He is fighting for you in this storm. Romans 8:31-32 says:

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:31-32‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

The God who sent His Son to die for you did not then abandon you. He has moved heaven and earth for you and the truth of His love for you is the anchor you must hold onto to experience His peace.

Now I’d love to hear from you. What step do you need to take today to stay calm and experience God’s peace? Let’s encourage one another in the comments.
