Why You Should Read the Bible Everyday

Why You Should Read the Bible Everyday

Sure, we know we ought to read the Bible and Bible study seems like the good Christian thing to do. But have you ever taken the time to really understand why daily reading and studying the Bible is so important? Today, I’m giving you 5 reasons why you should read and study the Bible that can change your life. Enjoy!

1. To hear from God

The first reason why we should study the Bible is to hear from God. As you may know, there are many ways that God speaks to us. Sometimes He speaks to us as we pray to Him. Sometimes He moves us by his Holy Spirit to know what He wants us to do. Sometimes He moves in our circumstances to show us which way to go. Other times, He speaks to us through other people or by confirming His message to us through dreams and visions. If you’ve never heard God in any of these ways, you can rest assured to know there is always one way that God will speak to His people and that is through His Word. We can always hear from God through the reading and the study of the Bible. God gave us the holy scriptures so that we could always know His heart and will for our lives. If we are ever confused about life, we have the Bible, the very Word of God to know the mind and will of God for us. The truth is that God is excited to speak to us. He wants to speak to us so much that he provides His Word as a sure way that we can always hear from Him, which is the first of many reasons why we should ready and study our Bibles.

2. To Know God’s Love

The second reason we should read and study the Bible is to know God’s love for us. You may have heard the Bible called God’s love letter to us because that is what it is. The Bible is the story of God chasing after the hearts of a people He desperately loves: you and me.

At Beloved Women, we are on a mission to share with women God loves them because we truly believe in the transforming power of God‘s love. The way that we know that love, however, is through the Word of God. It is His Word in the Bible that proclaims to us that we are in fact undoubtedly loved. We cannot separate God‘s love from His truth and the truth that we find in the Bible is that we are loved. So it is important for us to read and study the Bible so that we can know how loved we are. In Ephesians 3, we find a beautiful prayer from the Apostle Paul on the importance for believers to know God’s love. His prayer for his fellow believers to be strengthened:

“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:17-19‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

How do we comprehend God’s love as Paul prays we are strengthened to do? We read His love letter to us that is the Bible.

3. To Know How to Live

The third reason why we should study our Bible is because it is through God‘s Word that we find instruction and direction on how to live our lives. The world will give us so many quick schemes on how to live, but it is in the Word of God that we find His best plans for our lives.

In the Bible, God lays out a blueprint for us as to how we can live our lives. He does so not as a dictator who just wants control to feel good about Himself, but as a loving Father whose desire is for us to live an abundant and peaceful life. God tells us in Jeremiah 29:11:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT)

As we follow the example of Christ in the Bible, we receive God’s direction on how to live this one life we’ve been blessed with.

When we don’t know how to raise our kids, when we don’t know how to be a good spouse, when we don’t know what we should do next in our business, it is the Word of God that provides us the wisdom and insight that we need to navigate this uncertain world.

God's word is not a punishment to us. It is not a list of rules so that we can have a miserable life. God's word is given to us as a gift so that we will know how to find our way to the abundant life that Christ died for us to have.

4. To Combat Spiritual Warfare

The fourth reason why we should read and study our Bible is because the Bible provides the truth we need to defeat the lies of this world, and the lies that the enemy will throw at us every day to trick and deceive us. 1 Peter 5:8 warns believers:

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8 ESV)

The enemy is not going to come at us in an obvious way. He is deceptive and he has schemes to trick you. He wants to get you to fall into temptation without you even knowing it. He may be sneaky but he is not creative. For thousands of years, he’s used the same exact tactic to deceive and that is through lying. In John 8:44, Jesus describes the devil as “the father of lies” and that there is “no truth in him.”

However, when we know what’s true by studying and reading the truth in the Bible, we protect ourselves from the lies of the enemy.

We can then cut those lies down with the Sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God told to us in Ephesians 6:17. The Bible is our greatest weapon against spiritual warfare, so when we know God’s truth by studying, reading, and acquainting ourselves with the Bible, we will live victorious.

5. To Show Ourselves Approved

Finally, we should read and study the Bible so that we can share its truth with others and develop reasons why we believe what we believe. Our faith should not only be an emotional experience. We should love God with both our hearts and minds.

We comprehend who God is and His love for people to be able to intellectually express that to a world that desperately needs His truth. We can't do that through emotional appeal only. We have to logically be able to communicate the truth of God, the word of God, and the gospel of Christ. We find the strength to do that through the reading and studying of the Bible.

Now, this isn’t about appearing super smart and intellectually superior. In 1 Corinthians 2, the Apostle Paul explains that he preached the Gospel not with “persuasive words” but as a demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel is not complicated to understand and through reading and studying the Bible, we find support for the faith we hold in Christ, so we can communicate it with others.

Emotional experiences are good and God uses them to draw us to Him, but we also need to love God with our minds, especially when we can’t feel Him. Our faith can’t be based on feelings alone, since feelings come and go.  By studying God's word and meditating on the scriptures, we show ourselves approved as 2 Timothy 2:15 describes.
