God's Promise for an Anxious Mind

God's Promise for an Anxious Mind

If we’re not careful to guard our minds with God's truth, we can find our thoughts spiraling out of control. I’m sure at one point or another we’ve all been there. So in today’s video, I’m sharing 3 important promises of God to hold onto when an anxious mind leaves you feeling insecure, unstable, and fearful.

PROMISE 1: God is with you.

The first promise for the anxious mind is that God is with you. When Joshua was called to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, God told Joshua not to be afraid and to be courageous.

God says to Joshua:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 ESV)

God’s call to not be afraid was not a suggestion; it was a command. But God did not stop at the command; He followed it with a promise to be with Joshua every step of the way. Joshua’s courage was not to be rooted in his self, his abilities, or in the idea that everything would go perfect (because it wouldn’t). His courage was to be founded on the truth that the God of the universe would be by His side every step of the way.

God gives the same promise of His presence to all believers. Not only is He with us, but He also dwells in us by the power of His Holy Spirit. Romans tells us:

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39 ESV)

When my children go through phases where they are afraid at night, I’ll sit with them in their rooms until they go to sleep. The presence of their loving parent eases their anxiety, but the moment they hear or feel me leave or try to, their heads pop up and they ask “where are you going?”

Now our Father promises never to leave us. May we be as sensitive as small children to recognize His presence in our lives. When we are aware that God is with us, we become more secure in whatever life throws our way because we know we are never alone.

PROMISE 2: God is in control.

The second promise for the anxious mind is that God is in control. Much of our worry isn’t only in the thought that something bad will happen, but even more that we won’t be able to control it. We’re left feeling helpless if we base our security on our own ability and forget that although, no, we are not in control, we do know who is. We can’t control the future, but God has it all planned out. Proverbs 19:21 tells us:

"Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21 ESV)

We can’t control other people, but God is in the business of changing hearts. We can’t predict every outcome, but God’s will prevails. We don’t know the future, but we do know the God who created it.

PROMISE 3: God is for you.

Still, it’s not enough to know that God is in control, if we don’t trust His intention. The final promise the anxious mind needs to believe is that God is for you. There is no hope in knowing God is with you and that He is in control, if we believe He is this mean and cantankerous God waiting to strike us down with the next bad thing. It’s our own untrue thoughts about God and who He is that can fuel the fire to our anxious minds. In these times, Romans 8:28 reminds us:

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 ESV)

Even when we can’t see it and we can’t feel it, God is working on our behalf. He is a loving father who has our best interest in mind. It’s up to us to believe the truth about God, His relation to us, and that He is for us. Romans 8:32 reminds us:

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32 ESV)

If God would sacrifice His own Son to secure our eternity with Him, surely He is trustworthy to handle our today and tomorrow.

Many times, our worry may be a sign of fractured trust in God, too much reliance on ourselves or the things of this world, and a misguided view of God. But when we hold onto the truth of God’s promises, we don’t have to worry about anything. The truth that God is with us, He is in control and He is for us surpasses anything we could worry about. He truly is greater.
