Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. – Romans 8:33 ESV
Have you ever reached a point where you felt your sin was too great to be forgiven? Perhaps you hesitated to repent after struggling with a particular sin over and over again. Guilt and shame from sin can leave us feeling cut off from God, but there is good news.
In Christ, neither the world, Satan, nor our sinful natures can separate us from our gracious Heavenly Father. When we sin, we can approach God asking for forgiveness, and He is faithful to cleanse us from our mistakes. However, this doesn’t mean we won’t experience the consequences of our forgiven sin.
At times we confuse God’s discipline for condemnation, but His discipline evidences His love for us by helping us grasp the depravity of our sin. (Hebrews 12:6) So when you’re tempted to believe you’re too far gone, remember that Christ bore our guilt and declared us righteous through his death and life. Because God has graciously removed the penalty for our sin, no one can bring a charge against us.
God, I thank You for the cross and for sending Christ to purchase my innocence. When sin makes me feel cut-off from You, please help me run to You––not from You––with a repentant heart trusting You are for me. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray. Amen.
In what area do you need to apply the reality of God’s forgiveness? How will you practically remind yourself that God has justified you?
