Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. – Romans 12:15 ESV
Squeals of delight from earlier still rang in my ear. I’d finally had time to see
one of my best sister-friends who was recently engaged. I silently coached myself as she eagerly extended her hand for us to admire her engagement ring. “Look happy. Smile. Look happy!” I reminded myself.
Later, I thought about the day and tried to understand my conflicted feelings. I was happy for her. Right? Seeing another celebrate blessings I longed for was difficult. I suspect I’m not alone in feeling this way. A quick glance at any of our social media pages reveals a steady parade of people celebrating success in areas we may lack. So what’s our solution? When comparison steals our peace, we have two options: stay or pray.
That evening, instead of remaining discontent, I prayed, “Lord, please help me to be happy for my sister!” And you know what? He answered that prayer. When we ask God to help us “rejoice with those who rejoice,” not only will He be faithful to answer, but we will also see our own blessings with new appreciation.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for every blessing great and small in my life. I ask that You help me to root out any envy or jealousy lingering in my heart. Please teach me how to be like You so that I may rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
