But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 1 Kings 19:4 ESV
My cheerfulness and joy were characteristics my coworkers, peers, and church members came to expect of me. As the pressures of my job, broken relationships, and spiritual fatigue weighed heavier and heavier on my heart, I became depressed. To make matters worse, I felt guilty for it. Afterall, aren’t Christians supposed to be full of faith and carefree?
After God used Elijah to slay the priests of Baal, Elijah expected Israel’s idolatry to cease and King Ahab and Jezebel to repent. His hopes were shattered when Jezebel threatened to kill him instead, so he fled for his life. (1 Kings 18:20-19:3) Elijah, God’s prophet, then became so depressed that he asked God to take his life.
Today, be encouraged and know that depression isn’t a sin and it can happen to the best of us. Being a Christian doesn’t make you immune to poor mental health, but in Christ we have access to the Father of compassion. He’s the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, including our depression. (2 Corinthian 1:3-4)
Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are the God of all comfort. Lord, when we feel overwhelmed by the trials of life, we don’t have to fear condemnation. You care for us, love us, and want us to bring our brokenness to you. For any woman struggling with depression, God, we ask for your healing, encouragement, and comfort. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Are you or a loved one currently experiencing depression? How will you make an effort to share this biblical encouragement with that person and/or cling to this truth for yourself?
