For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. – Hebrews 12:11 ESV
During my second trimester of pregnancy, I suffered from severe cramping that rendered me immobile and sleepless for three long days. When I recovered, I couldn’t believe how quickly I forgot my torment. As I considered how at times pain can teach us, it scared me that I could forget that agony so easily.
Hebrews 12:11 teaches us that – like three days of severe cramping – God’s discipline can hurt, but the point of our pain is to help us grow in righteousness. When God brings a season of discipline to an end, we can choose to learn from that experience or quickly forget what God has taught us and continue in a cycle of disobedience.
Though it can be painful, God’s discipline is a gift. Instead of asking God to expedite his reproof, what if we asked Him to help us learn from our pain so that we can experience lasting freedom over strongholds of sin in our lives?
God, thank You for loving us and disciplining us as your children. (Hebrews 12:6) Lord, when times of refreshment and relief come, please help us remember lessons learned from Your admonishment. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
In your experience, what has helped you practice what you’ve learned from God’s discipline?
